FCP Workflow Question
Posted by Garydxd on April 14, 2005 at 3:49 amIs it possible to capture a lot of footage (20 hours), edit it down, then after editing is complete, tell FCP to only digitize what is used in the sequence? Putting 5-10 seconds on the heads and tail?

April 14, 2005 at 3:59 amYes Gary.
You can capture at low res. allowing you to fit more on your system. Make sure you label your tapes carefully. Edit your sequence. When finished you can export an EDL.(Edit Decision List).
When you bring the EDL into FCP, it will ask you to put your tapes back in and will only capture what is required to recreate your sequence. I’m even led to believe that it can recreate all of your transitions and color corrections etc. -

April 14, 2005 at 4:05 amAnother option is to use the Media manager to create a seperate sequence that you will then use to capture only what you need. Workflow laid out here:

both exporting edls and media manager work fine, but only used if carefully. The advantage of media manager is that you get to keep all the effects that you have added. An edl wont keep much in the way of effects…simple transitions, wipes etc, speed changes, but not muich more than that. Having said that if your sequence doesnt contain many effects it is FAR simpler than Media Manager. See Kens article for that.nick

April 14, 2005 at 2:38 pmHey Nick,
Just to clarify, If I capture at full rez, will the media manager method be a good way of eliminating the unused media?

April 14, 2005 at 5:33 pmYes! Just don’t forget to Control + click on the sequence to “Make sequence clips independent” first.
