What is the suggested post workflow when editing material in FCP shot on the Panasonic HPX-3000. I love the images I’ve seen at demos of the camera. The full 1920×1080 10 bit image looks gorgeous. The client will be shooting a series of commercials on a green screen stage. They will be recording in the AVC-Intra codec at the highest quality.

We have an HVX-200 for I’m familiar with the P2 MXF workflow with that camera, however AVC-Intra is a different game.

The workflow is a bit different in that AVCIntra is transcoded at ingest to ProRes. Which looks great but it takes quite a bit of extra time to ingest. We go over this a little bit on our HD Survival Guide DVD.

[Noah Kadner] “The workflow is a bit different in that AVCIntra is transcoded at ingest to ProRes”

Would this require the AVC-Intra codec? What app is doing the transcode? Does one follow the standard Log and Transfer method used to import MXF data from the HVX-200?

I searched the Cow and the Web for info on workflow with AVC-Intra but there seems to be nothing out there. One would think either Panasonic or Apple would put out a white paper on this new workflow.

    Noah,

Is the AVC codec full 422 color space.. I thought it was 421, similar to Sony Xdcam…

Does AVC key as well as plain old DVCpro hd? I understood the design behind AVC was just more recording time on the P2 cards.

The AVC-Intra codec is full raster 1920×1080 10 bit, 4:2:2. In theory you should be able to pull a much better key off AVC-Intra material as opposed to the more compressed DVCProHD.

You can read the white paper on AVC-Intra here:

FCP *requires* you to transcode to ProRes. Not all editors do; EDIUS edits AVC-Intra natively. But if you want to use FCP, you’re going to have to transcode.

Download the AVC-Intra codec from the Panasonic site, then you should be able to use the same Log & Transfer option to edit AVC-Intra on FCP.

Thanks for the info Barry. I found the link earlier for the Panasonic download of the AVC-Intra codec. I installed it and headed over to Birns & Sawyer where we are renting the camera. I did a camera test and work flow test with my MacBook Pro. All worked great. I took that same footage back to my office and did the transcode on my 8 core MacPro. It doesn’t take that long for the transcode into ProRes on the MacPro.
The footage looks fantastic, even under the fluorescents in the camera prep room! I wonder if we’ll see a Raylight plug-in anytime soon for AVC-Intra like we get with the MXF from the HVX-200? I really don’t mind the transcode time and working in ProRes works for us. Besides, this entire shoot is on a green screen stage and the compositors would need the footage in some other format other than AVC-Intra anyways. All the compositors have ProRes on their systems so shouldn’t be a problem there either.

I am using macbook pro to ingest avc-intra footage into fcp, but having problems. Installed the update from panasonic -transcode for mac, now when trying to connect thru log & transfer getting an error, “avc-intra is unsupported on ppc” I have proper system req’s.
Does anyone know how to make this work?

    Thanks

You may face the problem that FCP 6/7 does not recognize the P2 AVC-Intra MXF .mxf videos. To make it easier for editing Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 P2 AVC-Intra MXF videos on FCP 6/7, you can use Panasonic P2 AVC-Intra MXF Video Converter for Mac, which was a great Mac Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 MXF Converter. It can not only convert Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 P2 MXF .mxf videos to Apple ProRes MOV, but also make it easy for merge videos. https://www.ufusoft.com/tag/panasonic-aj-hpx3000-mxf-to-fcp-prores/
