FCP wont read HDV from mpeg file made with CapDVHS
I captured Highdef video from my Sony HDV camcorder. I used DHVHS on a PC to get it onto the disk as mpeg. They played fine. I burned them to a CD and Fedexed it to someone who is going to use Final Cut Pro to edit it.
He claims he cannot get Final Cut Pro to read it in. He said Quicktime would not play it either.
I asked him to try playing it with VLC player. He downloaded that and it played fine for him.
What can he do to get FCP to read in the files? Does he just need to change the filename extension? Or does he need to find a special codec?

He need to to have the same codec you used to make it. Actually, you should have asked him what codecs he can use before you made it. Or he should have requested a specific codec.
Now it’s trickier, because you can’t just load any codec into FCP and expect it to work. VLC is a cross-platform player, and that’s why it works. Just because VLC can read it doesn’t mean FCP will. “QuickTime” is just a wrapper. Anything can go inside it.
He may be able to convert it, I don’t know about that, but for future reference, you need to ask a lot more questions than “Can you take a QuickTime”. It’s kind of like asking “Can you wear pants?”, and then sending someone a random pair. You’ll never know if they’ll fit until after they get there. He also should have asked you questions. More communication for both of you could have possibly averted this.

I got it to work by having him transcode it. Frankly I am a little surprised that the HDV mpeg codec is not standard with Quicktime. Apple charges $20 extra for the mpeg codecs. One would think that a few flavors of mpeg would come with Quicktime as they do with Windows Media Player.
