  • FCP won’t output to DSR-25

Posted by Harry K. on April 5, 2005 at 2:01 pm

I load in 10 bit uncompressed thru AJA IO into FCP and want to dub off sequence thru firewire to my DSR-25. Of course, I disconnect IO and just use Firewire output. I’ve done this before but it won’t work now. The sequence is 720 by 486.
It won’t even let me monitor thru the deck. It gives me single frozen frames as I move thru timeline. I’ve trashed preferences etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have to output job very soon. thanks, Harry K.

Set the DSR to the FW input.

Unless you’re in a DV timeline, that’s not going to work.

Graeme, I know you’re the man, I have purchased your filters and think they’re terrific, but I’m pretty sure I have output a 10 bit sequence to my DSR-25. Am I wrong? And if I am, there are no workarounds to get where I want to be? Thanks for your time. Harry K.

Unless the timeline is in the DV codec, the deck doesn’t know what to do, and FCP doesn’t have the power to translate 10bit video to DV in real time to do so, so I’d say that you need to change your timeline to DV and re-render, and you’ll probably have to make it 720×480 too. You’ll get still frames as FCP is kind enough to do that DV render on the fly for one frame for you, but not for a timeline.

    Thanks for buying the filters!!

Graeme, One more question if you would be so kind.
Which method would result in better quality?
    A) Leave my timeline at 10 bit, go thru my AJA Io composite out into my DSR-25
    B) Change my timeline to DV at 720 by 480 and go firewire out to DSR-25
    Thanks again, Harry

B), as it’s digital all the way, avoiding analogue video losses. BTW, the DSR-25 only has composite and S-Video inputs. It doesn’t have component inputs or outputs – for that you need the DSR-45.
