  • FCP won’t open after electrical storm

Posted by Shuyler on August 27, 2007 at 5:01 am

I live in Denver and we just experienced an electrical storm that seems to have hurt my Mac. The ethernet ports aren’t working and when I try to open FCP, it starts and then quits. I have tried everything to fix the issues but to no avail. I have re-stalled OSX and FCP. The computer was off during the storm, so I’m not sure why it’s causing problems. Nothing else seems to be affected other than the ethernet and FCP. Any ideas??? Thanks!!!

Are you on a good surge protector and/or good power back up? Are the ethernet cables going through the same protection?

Doesn’t matter if the computer is off, if there is an electrical spike during the storm, it can damage the computer.

I am on a surge protector, but it’s quite old. In the Terminal, I am getting a message of “terminate called after throwing an instance of ‘aecore::CException”. Any ideas?? Thanks!

There’s a little button somewhere on the motherboard. Not sure what it does but when I’ve had power supply issues before, pushing it would fix it. I think it’s a breaker switch or something.

    Also try zapping the PRAM.

If it still doesn’t work, take it to an Apple Store.

    try pmu reset..

small button on the motherboard.. just press it a second.. with powercord off.

pram zapping: hold apple, option , p + r the same time untill you hear the startup sound for 2nd time..

    Thrash your prefs..

if your ethernet ports are broke, it’s possible your motherboard is partially dead.

    good luck

Your ethernet board has been fried.

This makes the machine lose its MAC(machine) address(es).
Final cut and most other pro apps use your machine address
to searialize the liscense. No MAC address….no FCP.

Your best bet is to take it to the Apple Store and say “my ethernet ports
are not working” and hope they don’t ask you any more questions.
They will need to replace the entire logic board.

    sorry.

i think you are talking about the PMU (Power Management Unit, older G5s and below), SMU (newer G5s) or SMC (System Management Control, intel machines)

    For Old G5s:

    For newer G5s

Thanks for filling me in on what that button is. Good to know.

Thanks everyone. After doing everything else possible, I do agree with Will that it is the ethernet card. I’m taking it in to Apple today. Thanks again!
