  • FCP won’t let me make a new sequence…

Posted by Jim Shields on February 26, 2009 at 3:54 pm

So in my current project, I cannot make a new sequence. I can duplicate sequences and rename them and go from there, but right-clicking on the project bin and selecting new sequence does noting, and neither does file->new->sequence.

It didn’t bother me too much at first since I had a workaround via duplicate sequences, but after I did all my grading in Color, Send->Final Cut Pro doesn’t work because it won’t let me make new sequences. Even when I open a new project, no sequences show up in the bin, and I can’t make new sequences in the new project, either.

Any suggestions on where I should start? I tried trashing the preferences, but that didn’t seem to help.

    FCP 6.0.5
    MacOS X 10.5.6
    Mac Pro dual 3.0 Xeon
    10 GB RAM

I just ran software update, and it says everything is up to date.

yes, multiple times. I’m currently moving all the footage and project files to an external drive so I can try opening up everything on my laptop. Hopefully that will work normally so that I can at least finish this project by my deadline this weekend…

    update:
I’m almost positive it’s something with that specific project file. While it’s open, I can’t make new sequences in any project. but when I close that project and open a new one, everything appears to be fine. The same thing is happening on my laptop with the files copied to an external harddrive. I think I can figure out a workaround to finish my project this week now, but does anyone have any ideas as to why this happened, and how I can prevent it in the future?

Sounds like a corrupt project file. Do a Save As and rename the project file.

Weird, I also just had the same problem.
But I did a save as and it didnt work.
I copied the bins over to a new project and saved, it also didn’t work.
There is a corrupt bin that makes it now want to make new sequences

So I had to copy over the bin, one at a time while testing to see if I can make new sequences.

    Weird.

I also observed this problem, but found it to be an error with the Browser. I kept clicking CMD-N to get a new sequence but never saw them. Then I collapsed all the clips that had internal markers & surprise there were seven new sequences. No way to scroll the Browser to see them when the clips were expanded.

    Obvious defect in Browser behavior.

    Hope this helps…
    Eric
