  • FCP without deck, just a DVD burner?

I’m going to get a panna 100A and FCP5 studio package and I was thinking, do I really need a deck? Why don’t I just capture from the camera directly and just burn a DVD master that I could send out to be replicated if possible? Skip having to throw in a DV deck in there somewhere?

What if the camera fails but you still have footage to capture?

What if you need to log and capture tapes but you also need to get some B-roll footage on a short time schedule? Which do you do first when instead, someone is log and capturing tapes while you get your extra footage?

One alternative is buying a very cheap DV camera from BestBuy and using that as a deck.

One other potential problem is that you limit yourself to Mini DV’s. With a full size deck, you get the extra option of DVCAM or DVDCPro.

I don’t think you should feel like you’re the only one with this idea.

There must be thousands of FCP users who don’t own a deck and just use a DV camcorder for input and output back to tape.

This is how the FCP system was originally designed.
Its certainly EXACTLY how iMovie is designed to operate.

I’m with Hector on this one. And don’t forget that cameras are not really design to be use as a deck so the cost of repairs will increase. May be I’m wrong but I’ve always heard the heads of the camera are not good for this use.
