FCP – why does saving a file not actually save the file?
Posted by Daniel Stone on September 10, 2008 at 5:09 pmI’ll work on a file, save it, close Final Cut Pro and go home. The next morning I open FCP, open the file and find that it’s not the last version I saved – it’s a version I saved like 5 saves ago. If I want the save I saved last I have to search for and open the last autosave file.
Also, FCP’s “Open Recent” list always reverts to a list from like 2 weeks ago when I restart FCP.
Is this just another thing on the “ways you have to trick Final Cut Studio 2 into doing what it’s supposed to do” list? I just worked on a project for an hour before realizing all the changes I made last time weren’t there. GRRRRRR!!!!

September 10, 2008 at 5:13 pmWhat version of FCP is this exactly? Did you update to 6.0.4? You should.
All the best,
Tom

September 10, 2008 at 5:26 pmHey Tom!
Yeah, it’s 6.0.4 but the problem has happened ever since FCS2. I would try reinstalling but having to go through the whole process of redoing the XDCam and P2 drivers and getting the 6.0.4 upgrade and so forth has me looking for alternative fixes.
If I could I would totally go back to the old Final Cut Studio.

September 10, 2008 at 5:47 pmWhen you’re done at the end of the day, try saying a new file with a number. For example, your folder should end up looking like this:
My_Project 01
My_Project 02
My_Project 03There’s no reason you SHOULD have that problem, and this doesn’t actually fix the problem. But hopefully it will give you a workaround that at least gives you a saved file that is correct.
This is just a guess, but give it a try and see if it works.

September 11, 2008 at 12:59 amI never trust “Open Recent” – I always go through the open dialog and select exactly the file I want to open. This will probably eliminate the other problem, as I swear, FCP does pick whatever file it wants when I use open recent – I’m sure Apple isn’t going to confirm this, but it drives me batty, and my staff is under penalty of death if they use “Open Recent” and hose themselves, and thus, my productivity time. The other suggestion above is a good one, to save to a new name at the end of the day (I’d probably include the date, ex. “Jack & Jill 09-10”.

September 11, 2008 at 6:49 pmYeah, that’s what I’ve been doing (saving new versions). And I have to trash my preference files whenever I want to do anything involving Firewire, so that gets done regularly.
I’m so frustrated with FCP. It seems everyday I run into some sort of issue with FCP that makes my job harder. I’ve definitely learned why the pros don’t use FCP – and why Avid is so expensive. Ugh.
Thanks everyone so much for the help.

This does not seem like normal behavior for FCP. As a matter of fact, it’s the first I have heard of anything like this. It seems to be it could be a permissions issue on your hard drive. The easiest way to ensure this is to get a new hard drive and do a fresh install of your OS. Then so a fresh install of FCP and whatever else you need. See if you still have problems. I am getting your indications that this is deeper than an FCP problem.

November 17, 2008 at 7:24 pmwe are getting the same problem here on OS 10.5.5 and FCP 6.0.4. on 3 different machines.
Actually at some times the Save All command under File is not even highlighted (just like when you want to hide an app and it won’t so you you need to do Show all before you can hide it).
The worst is that it pretends to save it, puts the right time and all but does not save the changes made since last opened. Same with the autosave vault.Dominic Guité
