FCP v5.1.2 crashes
Posted by Peter Wolsey on January 16, 2007 at 11:02 amJust crossgraded to FCP v5.1 and upgraded to 5.1.2 (for the much desired vignette filter as much as anything else!). The projects load OK but I’m experiencing a lot of crashes when scrubbing the curser along the timeline.
Solid as a rock until the crossgrade. Any ideas?
G5 / working in SD / GRaid drives.

January 16, 2007 at 4:29 pmWas all of the media captured in 5.1? If not, that could be part of the problem… files “not optimized” for the current version can give problems.
Also might post more about your system…. Mac? OS? QT? Did you do a clean install when you crossgraded? That could help too. i.e. erase and install of all software on your startup disk?

January 16, 2007 at 6:09 pmAll the media was captured in v5 (the version I started with in 06).
No, I didn’t do a clean install – pretty inexperienced at this, and didn’t realise you had to do that. I simply loaded the new software as described on the documentation. Didn’t uninstall the original FCP v5 or any of my preferences.
Wayne suggested that I should have ‘trashed the prefs, zap your PRAM, and repair your permissions’. Good advice I don’t doubt, but not entirely sure how to do all that yet!
The system is:
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7GHz
Mac OS X (v10.4.8)
Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Pro Single Link
2.5g DDR SDRAM
QT v7.0.2 -

January 16, 2007 at 8:34 pmhttps://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html has a good read on prefs. There’s also a free utility for this here: https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
To Zap the PRAM: restart your computer with the option+cmd+p+r keys held down. wait until it chimes 3 times during the boot up process, then let go of the keys so it will boot.
To repair permissions, open “Disk Utility” in the “Utilities” folder inside your Applications folder. Select the startup disk, and then choose to “repair Permissions”.
If this fails, post back, and I’ll get you started on a reinstall… if you just “upgraded” to Tiger, that’s a big no no… you should just rebuild your startup disk from the ground up whenever a new OS is upgraded to… I’ve an article about all this in the first issue of the COW magazine… running a rock solid FCP system. Register for it here: https://magazine.creativecow.net/index.html and from the email you’ll get after, you can download all 3 issues. All good reading for sure!

January 17, 2007 at 10:54 amThanks Jerry, I’ll do that. The Tiger OS was the original OS with the MAC so shouldn’t be any problem there. I’ll carry out your instructions and hopefully that will sort things out. Thanks for your help (and Wayne’s advice too)
