FCP upgrade from 2.2 to 4.5
I recently inherited the edit of a long-term documentary project that began in FCP 2.2, OS 9 and was never upgraded.
We decided to upgrade to 4.5 and Panther since I’d upgraded smaller projects the same way without problem. Now the 11MB project file takes about 5 minutes to open. Other than that, everything appears to be fine. Does anyone have experience with upgrades of this sort from FCP 2.2 to 4.5?
Of course we’ve archived a version in 2.2 and could always go back. However, editing in 2.2 is a chore and if the upgrade works it will save us time and trouble in the end. I’m just hoping that the time it takes to open the project isn’t indicative of something larger. We’re using a G4 with 867MHz processor and 1.12 GB of SDRAM.

That’s not a result of project size, that’s a result of how much media is associated with the project and whether or not that media is spread out over multiple drives.

FCP really likes dual processors and you’d be good to up the RAM to 2 or 3GB.

One more question, if you will. If the same project (same amount of media, same partioning across drives) was running faster on 2.2 then why does it run slower w/the upgrade?
Is it a programming thing where later versions of FCP simply require a faster computer to do the same thing? What (aside from buying a new G5) could be done to improve the situation? (The doc has over 100 hours of material that needS to be kept online for the time being).
