Purchase the upgrade. You will only be able to go 5.0.4 with a software update.

You will probably have to find it on eBay or a reseller who still happens to have it in stock. That version of the software is no longer being sold by Apple.

    All the best,

Wow do you mean that Apple fails to make available online maintenance upgrades to their products once a new verson is available? That’s a bit manipulative.

5.1 was not a maintenance release. It was in the new universal binary format that worked for both PowerPC and Intel machines. It was not a free upgrade. Updates are still available online. This product was never available online only as a standalone or a crossgrade purchase.

And FWIW, none of this was secret at the time. The crossgrade was available for something like 18 months. It was widely publicised at the time. There were dozens, maybe hundreds, of postings about it in this very forum from people who had bought it, were thinking of buying it, had issues installing it, didn’t think it was worth $50, thought it was a steal at $50, were upset about having to mail in their original disks, etc.

Right now, your options may be limited to upgrading to FCS 2, which includes FCP 6.

It is NOT a mantanace update.

Its not manipulative its business man. This is actually VARY normal. I don’t know of any software company that sells there old versions once the new ones come out.

    Question:

I’m running 4.5. I don’t think my system will support 6.0, and the budget isn’t there to upgrade the machine. So…

If I buy FCS 2 can I roll back to 5.1? Does Apple provide previous versions available for download which the FCS 2 serial number will unlock?

If not, I guess my options consist of staying where I’m at, or buying a new machine and new software? And I didn’t upgrade to FCP 5.1 when it was available because I was editing on Avid at a different company. It wasn’t an option for me.

    Thanks.

    Michael.

The requirements for FCP6 are fairly modest:

A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor
    1GB of RAM
An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)
A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher
Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later
    QuickTime 7.1.6 or later
    A DVD drive for installation

Any G4 with a dual processor should also be able to run it. You won’t get the apps like colour, but FCP will work by itself fine.

Apple pro applications are not available for download. Only maintenance releases are downloadable.
