I want to animate text paragraphs to type on the screen – like a typewriter effect. I know it can be done in AE but I am learning FCP and I want to know if I can use the text effect to do this. Can someone please explain or point me to a tutorial. I couldn’t find anything when searching the internet or this site that explains how to go about using the typewriter text effect within FCP.

    Thanks!

What version are you using? V5 or later? Use Title 3D. In the controls panel, about half way down are typing controls. Set keyframes for a start value of zero and an end value of 100. There is also a hold function for how long you want it to sit on the screen after typing. The speed is a bit of trial and error, how much text you need to type on and how long you make the text block in the timeline. There are other controls that will allow you to vary the pace and other wacky typing functions, which probably no one has ever used.

    All the best,

I am using FCP HD. Can you be more descriptive…I am fairly new at it. There’s also a function called “typewriter” when you go to the text options. You can pick Title 3d, title crawl or typewriter. Just wondering if that will do anything also?

    Thanks for your help.

I don’t believe your version can type using Title 3D. You didn’t give the version number. You have to use the Typewriter function. Pretty simple. Type your text in the text block. Now fast the text types out is determine by how much text there is and how long the text block is in the timeline. There is also a slider that sets a hold value, how long the text will be on the screen after it stops typing. Try it. It’s pretty simple.

I am using HD 4.5. I have 3d Title but it doesn’t seem to have character keyframe options….I can’t figure out how to get the text to type on like a typewriter. I can’t use the typewriter text function in FCP because it doesn’t allow for wrapping text nor does it allow for paragraphs like 3d title.

    Please help!!

    Thanks

That’s the only tool available in your version. You can wrap manually. Put a return at the end of the line. A bit of trail and error to see where the line breaks should go.

There may also be more fully featured third party typewriter tools. Try googling it.
