I have finished my first movie in FCP, sent it to color and back, and had the audio mastered in 5.1 in Pro Tools. I want to play it on a projector in HD, so I decided to play it off of my PS3 being it’s Much easier to carry than my G5. I exported an h.264 from compressor with 5.1 sound, but the PS3 wouldn’t play it (claiming it’s corrupt). What is the way to make this work?

What was your method of burning, and what kind of disc did you burn it to?

none, I put the quicktime on a CF card, I also tried streaming it over the network.

I’ve had very little luck with the PS3 playing back large H.264 files. I think there are two main problems. First, file shouldn’t be larger than 4GB and second, it needs to be a mp4 or m4v file. You might try compressing it using an AppleTV preset. I think that worked once. But the PS3 is much more picky than I expected it to be.

Will the AppleTV preset let me export it in 1080i with 5.1?

Don’t know. But in compressor, there is a place under the appleTV settings that says, “Include Dolby 5.1”. Not sure how it works, but you should play with it.

I’ve actually been playing with this just with trailers I downloaded in 1080p from Apple’s website. The 5.1 audio works great when using the Appl TV preset, but I haven’t been able to get it to export in 1080p or have 100% success. Sometimes they play and sometimes they won’t. Very frustrating.

I have done much testing and finally come up with the best ways to export to PS3.

You can export to an HD MP4 file from compressor and make it work on a PS3, but only stereo audio will play.

The best way to get a file into the Playstation 3 in HD is to encode the Video in compressor to a Blu Ray MPEG-2 video file and encode the audio to ac3. Now that you have the 2 seperate files you will need to mux them together into a M2TS stream. This can be done using the tsMuxeR program that is freely downloadable on the web.

    That’s it.

If you send your Sequence to Compressor and choose the MPEG2 Program stream, it works just fine on the PS3.

Yes, that will work. 5.1 audio will not.
