FCP to FTP compression help
Posted by Zeliha Bozkurt on October 25, 2007 at 12:51 pmHi All
I work for a post house and we often need to FTP the programmes to the relevant channels.
Programmes are edited with FCP 5 using DVC PRO-HD 29.97 codec (7.6MBpsec.)
Programmes average 1 hour and need to be delivered in MOV or WMV format – 150MB max file size and 320×180 min. dimensions.
What is the best way I can get this exported and delivered as quickly as possible?
Thanks
Zee.

Take than into Compressor
Set up the proper frame size you need and you can set a Maximum File Size in there.
It’s going to be a pretty highly compressed file as 1 hour down to 150MB is going to be pretty small.
but you can adjust and tweak the settings to your heart’s content to find the sweet spot between too much compression and the maximum file size. Once you have that, save the settings so all you have to do is apply it in the future.

Thank you for the reply. I have used Compressor in the past, but I find it takes a long time to compress anything.
Is there something like external encoding card you can reccomend the would do compress it much faster.
Thanks
Zee.

Nope. The hardware solutions I’ve seen run into the thousands of dollars and not worth it for what we do. You can certainly research that to see if anything would fit your budget.

Well I have no Idea what kind of system you have because your profile douse not say, but if your computer has multiple processors and or multiple cores make sure you configure qmaster to be able to utilize all of them for maximum performance with compressor.
Here is a video I recently watched about how do do that.

You may need two computers.
I use a Digital Rapids card which encodes very small files in real time. I just make a Quicktime in FCP, reimport it into FCP, and then play it out via my AJA card’s S-video outputs into the Digital Rapids card, which lives in a HP computer.
I’m sure this isn’t the only solution, but the cost is fairly low, especially if you have a spare PC lying around. (I’d like to learn how to use this card better, so buy one and then tell me what it can do.)
DRC-500 https://www.digital-rapids.com/Products/IndividualProducts/DRC-Stream%20500.aspx
My card doesn’t have machine control, which makes it a lot cheaper. But you can get the same card with more sophisticated software and RS-422 control.
Good luck.
