    Hi,

We have a 52min documentary project which was edited in FCP.

The majority of the footage has been shot on an XDCAM EX1 in 1080p25.
some of the other footage is Apple Pro Res (animations), also 1080p25 as well as some converted archive footage which was lowres.

A few shots are HDV, but this is just a handful.

Next week we are taking this project to a professional studio for final colour correction and mastering to HDCAM tape.
the studio has asked to deliver everything in Apple Pro Res.

this is the first time we deliver something that was shot on XDCAM EX1 so the online process seems different than what we are used to (most projects were on film stock before, so 2K scan + edl usually did the trick).

at first we thought to export everything in FCP to Apple Pro Res using the media manager so only the clips that are necessary are being exported. but then realised that we have used some crossfades and dip to colour transitions. taking these into the colour grading doesnt seem logical.

can someone point us to some good online references for the workflow that we will need for this project? any advice from people familiar with this is definitely more than welcome!

all the best and thanks in advance

Media manager will do the ProRes conversion for you and allow you to use handles on the copied, truncated media.

    Thanks, Stace.

so after the Media Manager export, i simply export an EDL from the final edit and we’re good to go? anything else to keep in mind?

Seems right – but check with your post house to be sure. Will they be doing the conform for you as well?

[Stephen Vilas] “Next week we are taking this project to a professional studio for final colour correction and mastering to HDCAM tape.

First, you didn’t tell us, are you delivering your project to them as a FCP project on a hard drive, or are your delivering an exported QT file? That’s very important information. What app is the facility using to do the color correction?

If they are using Color or doing the CC in FCP, there’s no need to media manage or recapture anything. If you’ve already sorted out any framerate issues, all you have to do is change the compressor to ProRes in Sequence>>Settings and then re-render.

This sounds as if your idea is to deliver as a single QT file, and you are right to be concerned about that. That can be a nightmare for color correction nowadays, and yes the transitions will be a problem. Working at a facility that uses Apple Color or even one that CCs in FCP using the 3-way CC and/or Colorista avoids the problems altogether.

No, I wont be delivering an FCP project to the facility.
they don’t use FCP nor Color. they use Coloris HD.
The plan was to deliver exported QT files (not a single file, but all the shots after being processed through Media manager)

    thanks for the help!

Well, I’m sure your CC will be excellent, it’s just that any workflow that takes you out of Final Cut Studio is very time-consuming and filled with many extra steps along the way. If you’re charging by the hour then more power to you, but personally, I’m all about maximizing both quality and efficiency whenever possible.
