FCP to AVID???
Posted by Juliett on March 9, 2006 at 1:33 pmHi
I have a 12 minute film edited on FCP coming onto my Avid. The FCP doesn’t have Automatic Duck. Would the Avid be able to read the FCP EDL’s that are exported from Final Cut.
Does the FCP have to have Automatic Duck.
Regards
Julie.

March 9, 2006 at 1:43 pmAvid should be able to read the EDL. I use GVG, but that’s because I’m an old GVG linear editor. I can read a GVG EDL like it’s a book. Many others use CMX.
EDLs only deal with 1 video layer and up to 4 audio channels. If they used multiple video layers and had more than 4 channels of audio in the FCP timeline, expect multiple EDLs that you will need to sync in the Avid.
Automatic Duck would make this much simpler if it’s a complicated timeline, but it’s not required. If it’s a simple timeline, AD would probably be overkill.
Automatic Duck is a great application! When you need it, it is fabulous!

You don’t need to have Automatic Duck, but it sure makes the entire process foolproof. What’s nice is the AVID editor gets an actual project, not just an EDL.
We bring AVID projects into FCP all the time with the Duck and it’s just bullet proof and about to get even better at NAB.

March 9, 2006 at 3:47 pmIf your sequence is at 23.98 or 24 Automatic Duck won’t work for you. The only reason I mentioned it is because you stated you edited at 12 minute “film”.
Why the need to move over to an Avid? Is there something else we could help you with to negate the need to move onto an Avid.Michael Alberts

March 9, 2006 at 5:35 pmAs a workaround, if you really can’t afford the duck..
Is to use several EDLs, one for each video layer.
But We usually do that to go from AVID to FCP, I don’t know how well it will work the other way around.
The duck is really the best way to go. And it’s not really very expensive, considering the hassles it will help you avoid!
My two cents.
