Forgive the cross post on the Avid side of these forums.

We’re working with an editor who is comfortable with Avid and wants to cut this feature on an old Media Composer. However, the director wants to also use us for all other functions, but our strength is in mastering with FCP and Final Touch. We’re trying to create a compatible solution for all involved & trying to come up with some solutions. The all Avid route is too cost-prohibitive for an independent film.

The project is shot on HD @ 23.98. Our plan was to digitize in FCP to an Avid XXX.XXX compatible file, move the media plus EDL to the Avid. We’d love to be able to also log on FCP and then move that to the Avid too. I have a feeling the later is asking too much.

On top of all this, the editor has an ancient Media Composer which he says he’d update to use HD clips. Not that I know, but I’m doubting it will work. I’d love to hear suggestions on this.

Finally, we finish here in FCP at HD 444 RGB which prints to film and goes out to deliverables. Has anyone here taken offline EDLs from Avid to FCP successfully? The main concern is wether this all happens in the native frame rate or at 29.97 TV speed.

Automatic duck I was told cannot take 23.98 from FCP to Avid. They recommended NOT involving an Avid in the mix. I was hoping for some alternate workflows.

    Thanks for your time.

You also posted the same question on at lest one other FCP forum. Please don’t do that, it’s just not necessary. Since you have already committed the crossposts, please be sure to go back to all of them and close the threads by synopsizing your results and telling us what worked.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Hi David,
it kind of depends on the complexity of the edit. We cut one 15m programme a week on an Avid version 7. Great solid old machine, then transfer to FCP using an edl, redigitise, and digitise a guide tape to check each cut. In 2 years never had a missed cut except where somone had named a tape incorrectly. However we cut simple documentaries, no complex effects, just cuts and the odd resize, perhaps a flip or two.

Sebsky tools has an application that convert a FCP batch list to an Avid ALE, so you can log in FCP, then take to avid. I imagine you could then relink the clips when back in FCP to your final edl, but we havent done that.

Why would you prefer to log in FCP? Personally I think it would be best to log/capture in the Avid, then redigitise the pics in FCP. Leave FCP til the end to do the important stuff…..! Or perhaps log in FCP and capture in Avid.
    hope this kind of helps
    best wishes
    Nick

    B-

Some people don’t read all the forums. I don’t think it’s offensive to publish on different sites, databases, for the benefit of that particular knowledgebase. Here, some Avid people won’t go to the FCP side either.

    Thanks for your advice though.

Thanks, Nick. I’d heard of Sebsky’s tools before & I’ll try this as part of my workflow & see what I come up against. We’re logging in FCP as currently these are our resident HD systems & have a technique that compresses it adequately at full raster. The producer doesn’t want to downconvert or NTSC the material and I don’t blame him. Trying to avoid the resolution-dependent dedicated approach of Avid & don’t want to invest in an HD one right now.

We are also planning the finish in FCP with a 24 DPX sequence for filmout. The Avid in the middle is the only hiccup. Done the whole thing in FCP with FinalTouch several times.
