  • FCP to Avid Media Composer or Premiere?

I’m very experienced with FCP, but have been missing opportunities to edit on Avid or Premiere. Disregarding cost, quality & reputation of the two other aps for the moment, which of the other two would make for the easiest transition to get up to speed quickly from FCP familiarity?

This would also presume running the software on a MacPro rather than PC. Know of any good, inexpensive training resources to facilitate quickly getting up-to-speed?

Well which one to learn would be based on which jobs are you having to pass more on. If you have to give up work because you don’t use AVID the most, moving to Premiere doesn’t make sense even if it easier to learn.

If you know how to edit all you need to do is to learn which buttons to press and the training books are normally a good place to start. Adobe has the Classroom in a Book series.

The main thing is to learn each program wants to work. AVID editors have a lot of issues with FCP when they try to get FCP to act like and AVID, it would be the same problem going the other way. Use an AVID like an AVID and not like a FCP. Same for Premiere.

Premiere is more akin to FCP than Avid is. Premiere Pro also has FCP 7.0 keyboard shortcuts. As far as tutorials, Adobe has so many that a simple google will show you lots of places including the Cow. Another one to look at is Adobe TV.

That said, it matters where the jobs are. It’s probably a good idea to be familiar with all three.

Finding an equal distribution of the big three editing aps around here. But in a relatively small market substantial work doesn’t stand out as an editor with any single ap. I do hear there’s a glut of FCP editors unfortunately.

In this situation, a specific media producer has both aps mentioned and the up-to-speed factor could make or break a possible deal. Given the luxury of time & money, I know my preference but need a client commitment before I make any more investments.

    Thanks for the response.
