  • FCP to Avid. How to preserve metadata

    Hello

I have a big project – 60 hours of materials.
It started in FCP, a lot have been logged, some sequences has been made.
Now we have an editor who works in AVID.

    Info:
    FCP 07
    Avid 5.5

    My questions are:

    1) Is it possible to use my scratch disc from FCP, the formats are apple prores 422 HQ/LT and DVCPRO_HD. I know it is not ideel with different formats. I would prefere not to load the material all over again, and then transcode it.

    2) How do I preserve the metadata (eg. reel) in all clips?
    – I have tried to use Boris FX, which creates a fine AAF with a lot of metadata, but I can’t relink it.
    – I have tried to import some of the clips, but it doesn’t preserve metadata
    – I know one of my co-workers have tried Automatic duck, but again with no luck.

    Any help is appreciated

Have the editor work in FCP…and they might fight it. But really, you put all this work into logging and organizing in FCP, and it simply will not translate to Avid without a LOT of hard work. It would be easier to reload the footage into Avid from scratch and re-organize it all, than to try to bring the footage over. Much less headache too.

But really, the best solution is to have the editor use FCP. No matter how much they will say it stinks and that Avid is really the only system they use. 🙂

Yes that would be the most easy thing to do. But the editor tried FCP and refuse to use it..so we have to find a way to get it into AVID.

    – Do you know a way where we at least can get the reels to come to AVID?
    – Or do you know Borisfx and how to relink it via the AAF. I just seems like the best solution so far..if it would be able to relink..

    Thanks anyway Shane

[Tina Hedegaard] ” But the editor tried FCP and refuse to use it”

Then hire another editor, or bring all the raw footage into the Avid and organize from scratch. Frankly, if you took the time to do everything in FCP…all this time…then you need to look for someone who uses FCP. If you wanted a specific editor because of their talent and background, it would have been best to hire the editor first, THEN choose the system to use…based on their comfort level. But if you just needed someone to edit the footage, then you needed to narrow the field by stating “This project is being cut on FCP, so only editors who use FCP need apply.” This is done all the time. People put the call out for editors, and indicate what system is being used, and insist that applicants have a working knowledge of that system to be considered.

[Tina Hedegaard] “- Do you know a way where we at least can get the reels to come to AVID?”

AMA…Avid Media Access. Use that to access the footage and get it into the Avid, but then TRANSCODE to DNxHD. Will you lose REEL information? Yes. Will you be able to re-load the footage in case a drive fails? Not from the original sources…only from the footage you accessed via AMA, so you might back that up. But really, if you are going to be doing that…why not just go back to the source and re-import/capture, so that you can get all that information?

[Tina Hedegaard] “- Or do you know Borisfx and how to relink it via the AAF. I just seems like the best solution so far..if it would be able to relink..”

Boris AAF is limited in what it can do. And while I do use Automatic Duck a lot to go back and forth from FCP to Avid and Avid to FCP, that (just like Boris) ONLY does sequences…not full project media. It is a way to get a cut from one system to the next.

Seriously…if you don’t want to recapture and re-organize, then hire another editor, one who uses FCP. Or if you really want THIS editor…the you need to re-do things in the Avid. Trying to “MacGuyver” the footage from one system to the next will take time, and be missing a lot of information you may need in the future.

def find another editor, I LOVE avid, but work on FCP also. It drives me crazy everytime i use it, but it’s simple to learn and if the client wants to use FCP than we use it.

Tell him it’s FCP or you’ll find someone else who interested in the job.

You could consider a FCP -> CatDV -> MME -> Avid workflow. A combination of XML and AAF+ALE import… Do a search here at the Cow or check the developer’s website.
