  • FCP to After Effects and back?

Posted by Sean Tatalovich on January 22, 2009 at 12:08 am

I don’t know if I should post this here or in FCP thread.

I used to use FCP and forgot a few things and I am sure somethings have changed as well. I am trying to figure out the best way to use after Effects with FCP 6.

Can I just drag a clip from FCP into AE? Or do I export as a file and import that into AE?

Once that is done how do I export back into FCP?

Any other tips regarding AE and FCP is appreciated?
    Thanks

    Hi Sean,

If you’re going to be going back and forth between fcp and ae a lot, I would seriously invest in Pro Import AE by Automatic Duck. It’s a bit pricey but it allows you to export your FCP timeline to AE.

You can pick it up from Digital Juice right now for $247.50 (half Price).

Thanks Grant. but how do I take my clip from FCP and import into AE. I know there is a way without exporting out as a QT.mov

You used to (1999) be able to export the clip as some FCP file, import into AE render FX and it would be already rendered in FCP.

This will explain better. When I used it in FCP 1.0 you could make a reference file from FCP. Export out of AE as Apple codec and into FCP without re-rendering.

    Hi,

If I’m reading you correctly, then you just want to get a clip out of FCP into AE. If so, then either mark the range on the timeline or do a matchframe (hit F) to load the specific clip into the Viewer.

Then go to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Keep the current settings, and turn off “Make Movie Self-contained”. This will create a by-reference movie.

Import that into After Effects and do your thang. Then render it out to exactly the same settings as your FCP sequence settings, including codec, frame size & frame rate. You can now place that clip on the Final Cut timeline without rerendering.

    Hope that helps,
    Ben
