  • FCP to AE6.5 pixel aspect ratio ‘keep it native’

    Dear FCP

When I export my reference movie from FCP HDV1080i PAL timeline I get an image size of 1920×1080

In Aftereffects Pro 6.5 I can make a composition 1920×1080 however when I import the movie it does not fit the frame it is too small. If I re-interpret the pixel aspect ratio to widescreen it is too big! There seems to be no correct pixel aspect ratio for this format. FCP should be Non-square 1.33:1

I want to composite some effects and then render out to the same codec for insert back into my FCP timeline. Without horizontal stretching the image which can introduce artifacts.

Do I need too upgrade again?

    Many thanks drPETE

The pixel aspect ratio of HD 1080i is square as far as I know..

Try using that setting in “interpret footage”.

A little math answers the question…

    1920/1080 = 1.77 (not 1.33)

    16/9= 1.77

So the pixels are square. Set interpretation to square in AE and you’ll be dead on.

    But…

When I check my factory setting for HDV it gives me the following:-

    Frame size HD 1440×1080 (16:9)

    Pixel Aspect HD 1440×1080

HDV is anamorphic by nature so the pixels can’t be square.

    Sorry I am still confused.

Your Maths is correct. It is spot on!

However I still can’t understand how a 1440×1080 timeline with square pixels
stretches to a 1920×1080 frame with ‘square pixels’

Many thanks for problem solved it is just the principle now!

In your first post you asked about HD 1080i …
Here the pixel format is square with a full image size of 1920 x 1080.

    HDV however is 1440 x 1080 using none-square pixels.
It’s squeezed on a 4:3 frame. FCP handles HDV nativ
with 1440 x 1080 and according pixel format. However
QuickTime will display HDV .MOVs with square pixels
and so After Effects … you might loose a bit of quality
by resizing the footage in AE and back to FCP but I
    think this won’t be visible.
