  • FCP to AE back to FCP color space issues/workflow suggestions?

Posted by Joe Procopio on February 27, 2009 at 8:55 pm

no problem exporting correct colors out of FCP, using the QT in AE to create graphics etc….but…exporting from AE, bringing the QT back into FCP…levels are whacked out…

I have played with color space settings etc in AE to see if I can get QT in FCP right, but I couldn’t find anything that seemed to work correctly.

Workflow for my tests was: Using HD and SD color bars created in FCP, exporting uncompressed QTs out of FCP…through regular export QT…into AE…then using multiple color space settings, make movie…checking settings on AE output…re-import to FCP…bingo bango bongo…all FUBAR!

any tips from FCP/AE/FCP would be very welcome…thanks!

Company called BitJazz has developed Codecs designed to address this specific issue. Link:

    https://www.bitjazz.com/en/products/sheervideo/

the developers get into a lot of color space theory on this site, but the bottom line is it works!

Correct me if i am wrong, but are’nt the ;ater versions of AE, such as CS3 and CS4, supposed to give you the option of working in a Non RGB colorspace, specificly one that is particular to video?

yes, there are a plethora of color space options in CS3…I’m sure CS4 is the same…haven’t upgraded yet…but within the next couple weeks we will be.

I haven’t found any that really work well. Some of my results from importing the QT from AE back into FCP look like the RGB 601/709 issue you get with importing RGB into AVID incorrectly…but the ones that don’t mess the gamma up change the color…my tests were with color bars so I could see how it really affected exact colors.

i’ll try that site…thanks for the info.

We have used this codec as follows: Green Screen material shot on P2 DVCPROHD, Load into FCP same codec. After selecting takes, exported Sheer 1080, wheich we then loaded into AE CS2 or 3. Used AE to make Alpha Channel versions of the Selects and exported from AE as Sheer as well, When re imported into FCP, just had to adjust setup ie black level, and all was well!

There are steps in this workflow where you have to set setup at either 7.5 or 0, and we probably missed one, so we had to tweek the black setting. Other than that it worked great, Fast exports, a lot less drive space and network xfer time than uncompressed.

You can run free trials for both mac and pc’s to give you a sense of hoe it will work for you.
