  • FCP throughput issue with RocketRaid/X4 enclosure

We just setup a RocketRaid 2322 card and an X4 enclosure using SATA II drives with our Pro tower using the Infiniband cable. We have good luck injesting HD 720 footage from a Panosonic P2 card and from a FS-100 Firestore. We also have success injesting SD footage from the Firestore. The footage plays well through our system.

Now we are trying to digitize from miniDV tape and we get a drop frame error when attempting to digitize SD footage. We tried batch and we tried capture now. Failed.

In Final Cut we used an Easy Setup for: DV-NTSC
Sequence Presets: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Capture Presets DV NTSC 48 kHz
Device Control Presets: FireWire NTSC (We are shooting drop frame)

We successfully digitized to the internal drive and to an external firewire 800 drive. Success.

From what I have read, dropped frame errors are throughput issues. Is it possible we have setup a RockRAID configuration that is having throughput issues?

Is there a Mac software that can test the transfer rate of the X4 enclosure to make sure the seek time is 3Gb/sec?

You can download the AJA Disk Speed Test for free and see how many MegsPerSecond your disks are pushing around.

How are your drives formatted with the Rocket Raid? Do you have them striped together? Most likey, you just need to have them formatted properly.

We are setup as a RAID 5. The web interface tool identifies that we have it established as a RAID 5 although I’m not comfortable that we are setup as a RAID 5. HighPoint uses a web interface that is very confusing. I’m hoping there is another utility that would be a better answer.
