FCP TGA export for VFX on Flame
I’ve searched all over the COW for this gamma shift problem thing happening when I export TGA Sequences out of FCP that are viewed on Flame.
I’ve just delivered a video that I graded on Color (ProResHQ 1920×1080, AJA Kona 3, CineTal B042), sent back to FCP, which I export to TGA sequence with QT Conversion. A few hours later, the director calls me from the VFX house to say “Things look way darker and a bit more saturated than what I saw in your suite.” I didn’t know what to say, but now I’ve searched everywhere online, it looks liks there are a few things to look out:
1. ProRes HQ is YUV and TGA is RGB, so it’s impossible to match the looks inbetween before/after identically.
2. It could be helped by a bit if 1.2 (some say 1.6) gamma correction when imported onto Flame or whatever.
3. This could be the gamma difference issue between Mac vs. PC, but this didn’t convince me since the Flame operator is using SDI to Sony BVM.What do you think the best way for me is to tell the VFX house at this point? Please consider followings:
Should I go to the VFX house to see how dark it looks, then try to adjust it on my end and export it again?
Should I tell them to apply the gamma correction? 1.2 or 1.6?
Some on this forum say not to use FCP to export TGA, but to use AE or Motion. But how will this overcome the difference between YUV to RGB color space? I don’t know.
Thanks in advance,
