FCP / Sony J3 remote question..
Ahhh creatives, always wanting the best but never getting it.. Heres the thing, we’ve got two Avid suites and a Graphics station with FCP, We’ve also got two DVW500p and when they’re remoted to the Avids and the FCP they work just fine… We’ve also got a Sony J3 player (SDI) and until someone discovered a setting on the Avid it’d be a bitch to try and get it to remote to either Avid or FCP.. Now we’ve discovered we can change the settings on the Avid so it’ll happily work the J3..
The question is, is there the same sort of fix or workaround on FCP 5.0.4 to change the deck control from the 500p to the J3?
They keep wanting to use my lovely 500p’s and I can’t have THAT! 😉

I don’t quite understand your question. The J3 and the DVW’s are only RS-422 controlled. THerefore, if you want one computer to see multiple decks, you’re going to need an “A-B” switch for the 9 pin control cable. These are very cheap ($15) and can be bought at most any electronic supply store. So, assuming you already have one of these switches, my only advice is when starting up FCP with a new deck selected, make sure you do a “complete restart” for the program.
By the way, the Sony J30 has a firewire output which would make your life even easier.

Sorry.. Not enough coffee on my end.. Both the DVW’s and the J3 are in a rack, I’ve got a remote patch panel so I’m linking directly from the FCP to the J3 with an RS232 remote.
It’d be so much easier with two mouse buttons!

I don’t think that FCP suupports RS-232 protocol. Are you sure that the J3 is RS-232 and not RS-422 for control?
We don’t have any J3’s but our DVW-500’s are RS-422.

To be honest with you I can’t be sure, everything has been hardwired into our racks.. I would *ASSUME* the people doing the wiring would have taken into account the fact about RS232/RS422, and as I just recieved them this morning, I know that they do sell RS232/RS422 serial adaptors (We’ve bought them so we can control the OTHER J3 machines we have on our promo producers desks, wired up to their PC’s for Avid media logger use).. As I said, at least Avid wins out on having a fairly idiot proof pulldown menu letting you switch between DVW500p and J3 controlling..

The J3 is RS-422 controlled, just like your 500’s. There is no RS-232 involved at all.
Something is not wired correctly or you don’t have the deck properly patched to your system. We’ve been running a J3 over two years now on our two FCP systems with zero control issues. And there’s nothing on the deck to change to make it work correctly. It just works automatically in local or remote.
