Running IMAC, recently purchased with 4 gb

Here’s my issue. after couple hours use the program slows downa dn most noticeable is a jumpy playback in the Canvas.

    or…

after using other programs like browsing the internet and closing everything…going into FCP…it will be jumpy playback.

Only way to fix this is to restart the computer. i don’t understand what’s the point of 4 gb then? checking out Activity monitor, it’s topping off at 1.5 gb of use with 2.5 gb free during the jumpy playback…why then does is slow down? And how can i fix this issue if there is a fix. any settings? I’m currently using Unlimited RT and Dynamic playback quality, and Full Playback Frame Rate.

These duo cores don’t work the way i thought they should.

I’ve seen this happen before on a G5. I don’t remember what fixed it. Sorry.

Hmm interesting.. A few quick suggestions that may or may not be useful…

    1. Check your drive space, after many renders it may start getting a little full. Go to your render file destinaton and delete a few of those.

    2. It may be a combo of many factors e.g. slightly underperforming graphics card, slow drive or lack of space, ram being used up. Im not sure of the architecture of Final Cut but if I am correct some programs can only take advantage of a portion of your available ram so having 1.5 gig remaining may not be enough.

Anyhow these are loose suggestions, I hope they help.

We’ve noticed that FCP has something of a memory leak. After working on a project for several hours the render time of particular timeline goes way up. FCP will report something like 15 minutes required to render the sequence. After we quite FCP and reopen the project the render time displayed is only 1 minute. This means there is a memory leak in the app. As far back as we can remember this has been happening and we’ve been using FCP since v1.
This may are may not be your exact problem. Instead of rebooting the entire computer just quit and restart FCP and see if that solves the problem.
