    Hi all,

So I checked out the HVX-200 today for a shoot tomorrow. Using a Powerbook (not a PC, as I had thought) for capturing from the camera. We tested the capture process, and it worked fine for 720P/24P footage, but we had hoped to shoot in 720P/24PN (Native) mode to save space.

Is it possible to capture footage from the P2 cards via firewire into FCP when shooting in this mode, and if so, what capture settings should be used.

Also, there are some instructions in the manual on how to connect an external drive directly to the camera, but no instructions on how to use the setup. How do you get footage from the camera directly to the firewire drive? That would be cool. 🙂

    Thanks!

Yes, you can get 24PN footage off the cameras P2 cards. Just use the DVCPRO HD 720p24 EASY SETUP and import the footage. There is a section in the manual titled HOW TO GET THE P2 CARD TO MOUNT ON YOUR COMPUTER LIKE A HARD DRIVE or something like that. It is the last section in the EDITING part of the manual.

And as far as I know, the only way to get footage off the P2 cards is to hook the card to a PC or Powerbook via the PCMCIA slot and download the footage…attach a P2 card reader to the computer…or use a P2 store to download the footage onto. YOu cannot just attach a hard drive to the camera and download that way, you need a device to control the download.

Ah, but there’s the cool part — FCP does the “Native” thing for you. If you record 720/24p mode (“Over 60”) so it streams out the firewire, then when FCP 5.0.4 captures the footage it’ll automatically strip out the duplicate frames and save only the active frames. Exactly like 720/24pN.

So if you’re streaming, don’t worry about the “N” modes, just use the regular mode, and you’ll get what you’re looking for.
