FCP – setting the Out
Posted by Siliana on November 5, 2007 at 9:04 amHello,
I’ve been coming across the same problem for some time now and it has to do with setting the Out of a clip – when I set the Out, it always turns out one frame ahead of where I want it and I have to set it one frame before the desired spot. Could someone give me a suggestion as to what the problem could be and how I can try to fix it?
Thanks,

November 5, 2007 at 2:17 pmThat’s not a problem, that’s how it is designed. No answer as to the “why” but that’s how FCP works.
I don’t recall it working that way in earlier versions (4.0 and earlier) but certainly since 5.0 it’s worked that way. Annoying as heck and i’m not sure who’s smart idea it was to make it like this, but that’s how it is.
You just need to subtract one frame from your Out Point.

As Walter says, this is just like that. The OUT point is part of the cut.
You must be careful about when you set IN and OUT points in the time-line, because you can over-write the first frame of the next clip.
But is very convenient when you are seting IN and OUT points in the Viewer. You know that your clip will end-up in the OUT frame. This included.
Otherwise you should do the oposite and add one more frame when cutting in the Viewer

November 5, 2007 at 7:07 pmHey there,
I’m not noticing what you’re noticing or else I’m just understand incorrectly. When I set an In and an Out in the viewer then edit it into the timeline, the first frame of the clip is where I set the In, and the last frame that I see is the frame that I set the out on. To me, that’s how I would expect it to behave. The playhead is parked on the very next frame so that I’m ready to make my next edit.
Are you seeing something different or am I just misunderstanding? I’m trying this on 5.1.4 btw.

November 6, 2007 at 10:24 amYes, in the Viewer it works just the same as you said, but when I set the Out in the Timeline, it is one frame forward…
Try it and let me know what happens. -

November 6, 2007 at 10:38 amIf you are marking the out point with a button or the keyboard shortcut it works exactly the same in the viewer as in the timeline, and it has worked that way since version 1 of the application. The out point is always marked, not at the playhead, but after the frame you’re looking at, so the out point includes in the frame you’re looking at in the selectikon. If you go to an edit point you’re always looking at the frame after the playhead, so marking that as the out point will include that frame.
All the best,
Tom
