  • FCP Scratch Disk, What do I need?

I’m looking at getting an external drive for my scratch and I’m not sure if I need a Raid or not.

Currently using the internal hard drive on a Mac Pro 500GB drive with 4GB RAM.

Running into space issues and looking at getting an external drive or Raid to use as a scratch disk.

My raw footage is in HD. Most of my files are imported through Log and Transfer as they are M2TS files recorded on a Sony HDR-SR5. This converts them to MOV files. We have another camera that records in High Def and stores files as mov’s natively on the camera.

My output are usually mov’s as well.

I’m not sure if other information would be helpful but do I need an external Raid drive for this or would I be fine with connecting a regular hard drive via firewire 800? Any specific recommendations based on my usage?

    Thanks,

    Tim

Lacie has some 2 tb dual drive ( removable ) raid options for a little over a grand a piece. I recommend some type of raid, after just losing a drive and having to pay a grand to a recovery service it is worth the investment.

Your Mac Pro has room for a total of 4 drives. You have been told in an earlier post not to use your system HD to store your media.

Fill up your 3 other slots with 1, 1.5 or 2tb drives. They will be fast enough to handle your video.

Put more RAM in your system.

    Steve,

Thanks for the response. I’ve been researching external hard drives/raids since I was told not to use my internal hard drive. All the feedback I’ve received has been to use an external device.

As far as RAM goes, I’m assuming I need 8GB minimum? I currently have 4x1GB DDR2 800mHz installed with four slots(2 risers) open.
