  • FCP says clips are offline in sequence but not in project

Posted by Quinn Costello on March 28, 2011 at 10:53 pm

This is so weird. When I open my project in FCP it says that there are a few dozen clips that are offline in the sequence. When I go to reconnect the clips it says that their path is simply ” – as in no path. When I do a find for the clips in the project they turn up. Also, when I track the clip down on the disk and locate it it will re-link but that will be a nightmare to do for all of these clips and I’m scared this is indicative of a larger problem. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Quinn

“Select all” on the clips in the sequence and “Cntrl” click and select relink and this will relink all the missing clips in the sequence.

    Hi-

Do you mean “reconnect media?” I’m not sure how to get to a re-link media command. When I reconnect it doesn’t reveal any path for my offline items which is the problem.

    Thanks,

I’m a little confused. Are you saying your timeline says they are offline but they do exist on your disc? If this is the case, the easy fix is to trash your thumbnail cache. and open up your project.

    Hi-

That is the case but, weirdly, they are online in the bins. Just offline with no path in the sequence. If I trash my thumbnail cache will I lose all of the thumbnails in the bins and the sequence? That may be more inconvenient than just re-linking the offline clips manually using “locate.” It’s a pain for sure but I do like having those thumbnails.

Thanks so much for all of your help.

Delete the thumbnail cache and restart FCP and all will be back to normal. No need to worry about deleting anything crucial. There will be no need to relink either.

The lost thumbnails is usually caused when a drive is becomes unconnected when using FCP.
