  • FCP Running really slow on HD Playback

Posted by Alex Palmer on March 23, 2010 at 5:16 am

Im having a problem with Final Cut constantly freezing every time I try to playback my timeline. This just recently started about 2 months ago and I first tried to fix the problem by completely re-imaging my computer and re-installing only the apps and files i really need.

I’m working with pro res files from the 5D all on my internal drive. My timeline will play about 1-2 seconds of the footage then freeze for about 5-10 seconds and continue for another 1-2 seconds however long down the timeline. I’ve tried reducing the playback quality and the playback frame rate but nothing is helping.

I have a Mac book pro with a 2.6 intel core duo with 4 gigs of ram.
the video card is the GeForce 8600M GT with 512 ram
my hard drive is the 200gb hitachi drive but i’m not completely sure of the speed, i have over 50gb free
    i’m running OSX 10.6.2
and i’m running Final Cut 6.0.6

I was just wondering if anybody has had this problem before and if so if you have found a solution to this problem. I can hardly get any thing done with it like this and it is quite frustrating.

    Thanks

This one’s very simple. Get a firewire 800 drive. Copy your media to that drive and edit away. You can’t edit with media, especially HD media, from the system drive, which is busy running apps and the OS.

    David,
Since I’ll be purchasing an iMac i7 with 8GB memory soon for video editing, do I still need to copy media to a FW800 external drive even with the processing power of the iMac i7? I assumed that the iMac’s system drive would be more than capable to handle whatever editing in FCP 7 and/or other FCS 3 apps that I would have open, thereby not requiring the use of an external FW800 hard drive. Am I wrong in my assumption? By the way, I’m a new user of Mac hardware, so please bear with me.

[Tony McCall] “Am I wrong in my assumption?”

Yes you are completely wrong. The internal system drive should NEVER be used for media playback. Laptop, iMac or Mac Pro. The system drive is ONLY for the OS and Software.

Media always has to be stored on a dedicated media array.

Thanks Walter. Which brands/types of media array would you suggest for use on an iMac i7? Using FW800 most likely instead of USB.

I haven’t used FW800 for day to day editing in a very long time, but the G-Tech GRAIDs are what we have here, the original models from 4 or 5 years ago. LaCie also makes some large FW800 enclosures as does WeibeTech.

Our iMacs are all tied into the 32TB Ethernet SAN here so we don’t run any local storage to them.

Would I be correct to use a RAID 5 configuration for video and photo editing requirements?
