When I export a complex sequence to a QuickTime Movie(which already has been rendered in the timeline), does QuickTime write the data from the rendered file, or does it basically re-render the frame to write the QuickTime data.

I guess what I’m really asking is: When I create a QuickTime movie from a rendered time line, do I need to render the timeline first, or can I just export a QT movie and expect the same quality as if I had rendered, (saving me a ton of time) These are 1080i timelines, so quality counts.

    QT7.3, Kona2 (v4.0) w/Kbox, Atto UL3D, Medea RTRX640, Huge MV 1.8Tbyte, Radeon 9800XT

On export everything that haven’t been rendered is rendered.
You don’t need to render in the time-line.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

I think what you’re asking is, if it plays in realtime, but I haven’t rendered, can I go ahead and export.

Technically the answer is yes, but you’re not saving anytime, you are in fact losing time.

FCP will render unrendered parts of your timeline if you attempt to export before rendering, but it seems to take much longer than a manual render and export, and more inportantly, should you have to make a second export it will have to render yet again. In addition, if you’re evaluating or QCing without a full render you can easily miss abberations and artifacts that may only become apparent after a render.
