FCP Render Permission
Posted by Doug Weihnacht on September 19, 2008 at 11:51 pmI bought a new Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5 and used file transfer to bring over all my apps including FCP. I then upgraded FCP so it would accept XDCam footage. But now, it won’t give me permission to render. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions and that will work for a day or so, but as soon as I import new media, it doesn’t work and Disk Utility can’t seem to repair it. HELP! Apple wants to charge me $800 to solve a problem that’s clearly not my doing. If I can’t find a solution, I’m scrapping FCP and buying Premiere.

September 20, 2008 at 12:14 amMore information. What version of Final Cut are you using? Are your scratch disks externals? When you render what error message are you receiving?

September 20, 2008 at 12:20 amHi Richard:
I’m using FCP 6.0.4. I have an external drive I use for my scratch. It’s the same drive I used on the older system, so maybe it’s bring back into the mix some out-dated information or preference? I just reset Disk Utility permission repair again and it did work to release me from the permissions denied curse– for now, but I bet something in my legacy system is causing the problem, as you seem to have surmised.

September 20, 2008 at 12:23 amTry to run DiskWarrior or any other application that repairs the permissions more in deep.

September 20, 2008 at 12:37 amWe frequently have an issue due to our multiple san setups that cause render issues, which is, when a project is created using a drive with exclusive write access is passed to another system that does not have write access to that drive, if the new user attempts to render, he’ll get the message “File Specified is Locked” However, if we use the Render Manager under tools to flush away the render queue, and render again, the sequences will render fine.

This is never a recommended way to install ProApps on a system. We always recommend you install all apps fresh from the original discs as the transfer process from Apple is not an absolute clone from drive to drive. Some information does not transfer and I have found folks have more issues related to FCP when they attempt this procedure rather than installing fresh from the drives.
I would recommend wiping out all your Studio related apps and re-installing fresh.

Absolutely right. Even with something Like Carbon Copy Cloner, you may not get a full clone of your drives.
No long ago I made a drive copy with Carbon Copy Cloner and had problems to start specially all the FCS applications. I had to reenter the keys.
