  • FCP real time playback for animation

    new FCP user…

What I am doing…rendering out animations from after effects to a CCIR 601 16×9 uncompressed Quick time file.
when i take that into FCP I can scrub it but i can’t play it back without rendering it. I have tried different settings, you know getting my timeline in line with the setting for the quicktime… but no dice

I though FCP with a smoking new mac-pro could handle this kind of stuff without rendering …I am sure I must be missing a step or doing a no-no. Can some one please give advice on what a proper work flow would be for an animation house using FCP?

It can, but only if your video and timeline settings match exactly and if you set up your project correctly. Are you new to FCP?

You’re doing something wrong. What codec are you using to export? Apple Uncompressed 8-bit?

yes I am new to FC.
I was working with the tech guy at apple to get the settings of my source and timeline to match…but no luck with that.

do you need a codec?…because I had set my quicktimes to render with no compression…..and no codec. If so, what codec is best for working with FCP?

    thanks for helping out!

    Try this;

http://www.proapptips.com/shane NON STANDARD CODECS IN FCP

Might still have to render the audio, but that is much faster.

Shane, that is a way cool tip, but, I think Mastra needs to learn the basics and needs to find a way to create AE files that work without workarounds.

    Mastra,

Are you using the typical uncompressed QT — i.e Millions of Colors??? If so, that’s not an editing codec. You would do better to create using either of the Apple 8-bit or 10-bit 4:2:2 uncompressed codecs. If those are not available in AE for some reason, you should try installing the Kona codecs and use their 8 or 10 bit codecs. In any of the cases I’m mentioning here, make certain to change the Easy Setup in FCP to match, and then open a new sequence before putting anything on a timeline.

I’m pretty sure you have chosen the wrong codec for output in AE. There are dozens of them already on your machine and it’s easy to get things wrong. I’d use uncompressed 4:2:2, if you have a fast disk (or array for HD).

Rest assured, a MacPro can handle this, I’m working that way every day.

Uncompressed or Lossless? If it’s Lossless, then yes, you’ll need to re-render the files in FCP. Render to the codec you’re actually going to use in FCP such as Uncompressed 4:2:2 and you’ll need to put that file on a media drive, NOT the System Drive.

Thanks for all the help. I have installed the kona codec on my mac and pc…Hopefully that will work. Are there other codecs to try? Is the apple one available for PC? Also what is the uncompressed 4:2:2? Is that the apple codec?

    thanks again for helping out

to get the pc version I believe you need to download that version of the codec.

I use black magic hardware and have 8 and 10 bit versions of their quicktime codec on the G5 and PC.

I can render out of AE from the pc, then import that into fcp and play it in realtime.

I had to teach this to our compositor because he was initially doing what you were, rendering out though to animation, then importing it, then rendering a gain so it would play in realtime.
