FCP ProRes422 – Gigabit – Windows 500GB Raid Capture problem
Hello,
I have an iMac 17″ Intel CoreDuo@1.7Ghz and 160GB 5400hdd and a Windows 2003 “Server” with 2 250GB 7200 Hdd’s in RAID and a gigabit network between them (D-Link DGE-528T on the PC)
I want to capture ProRes422 via FireWire on the Windows share. I set it up but FCP captures about 400-500 Mb and then freezes. (The capture is usualy 18-25% behind camera and network utilisation about 8% and then drops to 0)
If i capture directly on the iMac hdd, the capture is most of the time Real-Time or 1-2% behind.
Can this be fixed ?

How much RAM is on your iMac? This is a RAM dependent process, even though your lags aren’t that great, but also, there may be a hiccup caused by going to a Windowze server.
Hard drives are so cheap right now, maybe you should get a little SATA RAID.

I have 2 gb RAM on the iMac. The 2 hdd’s on the PC are S-ATA2 in RAID 0.
I made a test today, i captured on the iMac and then copied them on the windows share and pb them on the iMac and they played ok, at 50fps and the gigabit network was at 8-9%.
When i copied them from mac to win it was @ 25-40%
So i guess the problem comes from the iMac or FCP

Well, you’re asking a lot from that computer, capturing to ProRes via FW takes some horsepower, so you’re lucky you’re getting anything.
