  • FCP PLAYING 23.98 CLIP @ 29.97

Posted by Bryan Hargrave on April 23, 2008 at 5:17 am

Someone else digitized a movie for me to cut a trailer from. When inspected through FCP and QT the frame rate says 23.98. But its playing down @ 29.97 when I count frames. The clip is 1hour 30min. long and drifts out of sync when played in FCP 6.02. In QT it plays just fine, in sync. I have started new projects did the easy setup for 23.98. I’m edited in 23.98 in my sequence settings. For now I continue to cut, but I have a feeling my list for finishing this spot in HD @ 23.98 is going to be off. I’ve never encountered this problem before but I did find a posting where someone had the same problem. No fixes where posted for that problem though. I have the same problem in my laptop, as well as my G5.

    Help!!!!

    Bryan,

To get an educated answer you’re going to have to divulge the actual format of the source video. Is it HDV, DCVPro, XDCAM, HDCAM??? At this point, all we have to go on is that its some unknown flavor of HD with a mysterious framerate.

It was digitized DV 720 x 480 @ 23.98. Thats what FCP says it is and so does QT. QT plays it down just fine. But editing in FCP has been a nightmare all day. The strange thing is I can’t get this clip to play in a 24FPS base in FCP. When I count frames it goes to the 23rd frame then drops the 24th frame and goes to frame 25 – 29. Editing in a 23.98 sequence with this clip was very problematic. Its like FCP is not recognizing that its a 23.98 frame rate.

    Thanks,

    Bryan

    Bryan,

Anything is possible. It may have been digitized using incorrect settings or maybe not. Do you know what camera it was shot with?

In any case, check out the following thread on this subject, it pretty much covers the entire gamut for the issue you’re facing: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/982342#982468 .

It was digitized from an Edited Master on Digital Beta. Do you know of anyway to get a Digital Beta deck to do 23.98. Because I’m not aware of any deck that does that. Usually, its 29.97 and in that case this other editor who digitized the clip from Digital Beta thru FCP at DV 720 x 480 @ 23.98FPS would have messed up the clip. It should have been digitized at 29.97, so I’m thinking. Interestly enough, I’ve put this clip into a OfflineHD sequence rendered it out and exported as a FCP movie. That seemed to have fixed my out of sync problem. But I don’t think the TC is going to translate in the edl for the finish of this project.

    Thanks for your time,

    Bryan
