FCP pipeline – DVCPro HD vs. HDV?
i’m considering the JVC HD100U, based on dealer recommendations over the Sony Z1U, but now am wondering really what the best choice would be…or wait another 6 months for something “better” (of course, i also realize that a person can keep “waiting” forever and never buy anything since stuff is getting better/faster/cheaper at a progressively alarming rate these days.
anyway, if i go with the JVC and its’ 720p picture and DVCProHD codec, what is the best pipeline to use throughout FCP? i have the Decklink SP card which appears to have ALL these codecs built-in, but i’m a little lost as to how to shoot the “best” HD quality with this camera, do all the post without any RAID drives?, and then output to a DVCProHD master or possibly HDCam?
what are your thoughts here? what cameras and codecs are you guys mostly using? the HD channels seem to have different requirements as to wha they will take and air, so it’s hard to know exactly what to get…

First off, Decklink SP is a standard def card, and you are talking High Def video here.
Second, I don’t think it is possible to capture HDV footage as DVCPRO HD. Two COMPLETELY differenct formats.
My thoughts? Avoid HDV like the plague. And the JVC most of all. Currently it is the most INCOMPATIBLE HDV formatted camera in terms of working with FCP. ONLY 720p30, and only if you are lucky. People are still reporting problems.
HDV is so highly compressed that it really isn’t a good HD camera. The HVX-200 DVCPRO HD camera by Panasonic is due out this month…but a HUGE waiting list. I’d get on that list if I were you. Mind you, it is $10,000 with 2 P2 cards, and it only captures HD to those P2 cards…20 min each.
Sorry, I am in the “HDV is evil” camp and really rally against it.

wow. i had no idea…
i have a few friends with the Z1U and they SAY they love it, both the images it shoots and editing in FCP. as for the JVC, i haven’t heard much about it locally, though my dealer seems to like it. it’s really that hard to edit in FCP, eh? i guess i’ll keep looking unless someone on here has a good pipeline for its format.
as for my Decklink card, it says it has the codecs for all these formats. i don’t see why i can’t import and export video in those formats. what am i missing here (besides a complete brain)?
