    I’m running FC 7.0.3 on a Quad Core 2x 2.26 w/ 17GB RAM, NVidia Geforce 120, OWC RAID 0 (2 drives) eSata (RocketRaid 2314 controller).

I have a project that was shot in Mostly HDV & XDCam EX. It’s a year in review, so I have a lot of source material that I need to pull from. I have Motion open because I am refining GFX. It’s been very crashy. FCS Maintenance Crash Analyzer is telling me; cause is long GOP, it’s too complex etc., but this is what I need to work with. Any suggestions? More RAM, Bigger RAID, better GFX card, and if so any recommendations?

Thanks as always for your sage advice.

    Cheers,

    Jim,
My guess is that your HDV footage is at least part of the problem, HDV is a nasty format to work with. Your best bet is to transcode the HDV footage from the get go.

You can transcode to ProRes as you ingest the HDV footage.

Also, in your sequence settings, make sure on the “Render Control” tab, in the “Render” box you have “Apple ProRes422 [HDV, XDCAM HD/EX/HD422 only]” selected in the “Codec” drop down menu.

NVidia graphics cards have been proven to cause some problems with Motion compared to ATI. Same for Color.

The latest ATI card is the HD 5870.

Thanks for the quick reply. The render setting is on ProRes (always a good reminder). At present, we are transitioning from DV to HDV to XDCam. We will settle in on XDCam (at least for a while until some bright soul comes up with an actual ProRes camera [not just an Ki mini add on] BTW, there would be hours of HDV footage to transcode, I was hoping for a hardware solution.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Jim,

It’s HDV rendering that is stressing out your computer more than anything, and the XDCam footage is also neatly as processor intensive. Change your compressor to ProRes in Sequence>>Settings and re-render the timeline. You should encounter fewer crashes.
