I finally got started with the new Final Cut Pro 5, a new 2.5GHz dual processor G5 with 2 Gigabyte RAM 250 GB internal hard drive and a ATI Radeon 9800XT graphics card. I am trying to get familiar with it just by going through the tutorial and it is shockingly unresponsive. Expanding and compressing the timeline view is very sluggish as is dragging clips along the timeline. Ablolutely nothing will drag from the browser window directly to the timeline. Often the thumbnails don’t show up in the timeline, just empty white boxes with a crosshair. This is just a tutorial! How do people do real work with this system? What can I possibly be overlooking. The voice of experience would be greatly appreciated. The performance in 2 1/2 D After Effects was much better.

Which OS are you running in, and was it the original install on the Mac or was there an upgrade done from Panther to Tiger or?

And to add to Jerry’s post, is the Tutorial Media on the harddrive or still on the DVD’s? It should be on your harddrive.

I bought the last of the old G5s (pre-Tiger) and have since upgraded to the new OS and then installed Final Cut Studio. Strangely enough however, last night I closed FCP but didn’t even shut down my system and today, everything seems to work smoothly. I don’t understand at all but thanks for trying to help. By way, once I start real work on short films, I plan to purchase an external media drive. I’m looking at the G-tech 250GB firewire drive. Will a non-RAID firewire drive provide good performance for FCP and DVD Studio? I don’t want a sluggish system like yesterday to become an ongoing problem.

    Much Thanks,

    Julianna

Just to let you know yes, I had copied all files onto my desktop and ejected the DVD. As I mentioned in the previous thread, FCP performance has mysteriously emerged. Thanks for your time and your interest in trying to help.
