I have a G5 2.5 GHz with FCP HD in my studio but we’re going to add a Powerbook to use away from the office for some capturing and basic editing. Our first thought was that we would only need Final Cut Express for these basic functions because of the cost savings but I want to make sure that there is full compatiblity between FCP and Express as we would be moving some video and project files from Express to FCP. Has anyone tried integrating FCP and Final Cut Express?

Ideally, I’d rather have FCP on both but the cost differential is a little tough to swallow, given some of our other company expenses. Is there a way to use my current G5 FCP in the Powerbook – I have my original FCP 1.2.5 install disc plus all the upgrade discs through FCP HD.

    Thank you for your help.

No TC support on Express. So, no, you can’t use it as a logging or offline edit machine. Apple is a little bit ahead of you.

Double check just in case. But in previous versions of express that’s the case. I remember a few producers buying it for their laptop as a logging too and weren’t very happy. For that, there’s an amazing app called CatDV that logs and loads little qt movie thumbnails. If you get the more expensive version it will export FCP shot lists and Avid shot lists. The producer can look at shots on her laptop as little quarter sized thumbnail movies while you’re editing. The one time I worked with a producer that had this is was very productive. She’d log tapes while I edit. She’d also preview shot takes while I edit too, so when I reached a certain point she could say try shot 3 or shot 4 here, etc.
