November 16, 2015 at 5:20 pmNot unless it was shot letterboxed. Some DV cameras did that, and that SEVERELY reduced the quality of the image. Anamorphic is better quality. FCP will unsqueeze it, if you tag the footage as anamorphic. And you can export it letterboxed, if you wish. But 16:9 is more of a norm lately.

November 16, 2015 at 8:22 pmI was hoping here was a way for fcp to automatically unsqueeze it while capturing. Is processing required? (Render and Export from a sequence?). Adventures with old equipment!

November 16, 2015 at 10:07 pmFCP does unsqueeze it, in a way. Simply flag the footage ANAMORPHIC and FCP will play it back unsqueezed. Sorry, there is no 16:9 SD format in NTSC that is not squeezed. FCP works in standard formats only. To you can capture and edit it unsqueezed, it’ll look fine. Then the final export you’ll have to fiddle with things…depending on your delivery specs.
