Hi all. I have a quicktime that I exported from my work computer at 720×486. I bring it home to my final cut, load it into the timeline which is set to uncompressed 10-bit 720×486 ntsc-ccir (40:27) pixels. I export it as a quicktime conversion, but keep the aspect ratio at 720×486… When I look at the new quicktime the x axis seems distorted and wider than it should be. I compared it to the original quicktime from work and it is a lot wider. I try exporting again as a quicktime conversion and preserve aspect ratio using letter box, now the quicktime is the right size, but a bit of the top and bottom have been cropped.

I’ve tried numerous different types of video from different sources with different codecs and when I export using QT conversion or as quicktime movie the x axis is too wide when I view it in quicktime. However when I get info on the clip it still says 720×486 and when I bring it into Final Cut and get info it also says 720×486.

Weird thing is when I export using quicktime conversion at 640×480, the aspect ratio is spot on… but I’ve been using ccir pixels this whole time, not square. Am I just missing something so obvious? Thanks.

Qt does not automatically correct for pixel aspect. It shows square pixels. There is nothing wrong with your files. They should look wide in Qt. If you’d like them displayed correctly, simply press cmd+j and ad adjust the video track display parameters to 648×486 and save. That’s the sq pixel version of 720×486.
