  • FCP – multiclip from sequence ?

Posted by Laimonas Paskevicius on December 18, 2009 at 9:50 am

I have young singers contest taped with 3 cameras – 2 from tripod and crane. One camera recorded on 184 min. DVCAM others on small miniDV tapes. So I have 2 full size DVCAM tapes and 4 miniDV tapes from each camera. I grabbed all my footage to HDD and tried to synchronize it. In FCP it could be done in few different ways – synchronize all clips by timecode (in my situation it’s not acceptable, because cameras was not synced together), by clip start and by clip end. None of those three methods meet my requirements 🙂 I started to synchronize in good old way – manually by waveform. Made my job well and then observed, that my crane is out of sync after some half of hour. I found, that crane camera was stopped few times not only for cassette change, but why then my FCP did not detected that and I have those stops in one continuous clip ??!!! (In capture preferences is checked that FCP must create new clip on time code brake). Ok. I found those stops, split them, remade synchronization. So now I have well synchronized timeline with 3 video tracks. So now I must make multiclip file… And how I can do that ? I did not find any way how to crate multiclip from sequence. I remembered, that probably a year ago I tried smart software named “Plural Eyes”. I tried to use it, but because I have timecode breaks on my footage from crane and FCP did not detect those breaks, “Plural Eyes” was unable to synchronize clips properly. By the way I observed one interesting thing – when you start “Plural Eyes” and click on “Multiclip” button without clicking on “Sync”, “Plural Eyes” simply creates multiclip from timeline named “pluraleyes” without changing position of clips inside that timeline. So I made in this way two different multiclips (because contest is divided in two parts). With first clip I have no problems and it’s edited already. With second multiclip some bullshit happens. I have my camera angles in 1,3 and 5 slots. After few minutes 4th camera appears (it’s a copy of already used footage) and in some moment past 3 cameras goes out of sync.
I worked a lot of time with Canopus Edius. From 4th version it has multicam option too. I really like Edius multicam engine. You simply place your clips on timeline (each camera in different track), synchronize it and that’s all. When you work in multicam mode Edius recognizes each track as different camera and when you cut to angle it simply cuts all tracks and leaves clip in active camera track enabled, all other clips in other tracks becomes disabled.

My basic question is – are it’s possible in FCP to make multiclip from sequence ?

You’ve got a couple of options, if I understand your situation correctly. (1) You can use Final Cut to automatically create subclips based on the start/stop points of your long clips. (2) You can use the razor tool to cut your clips at those points.

Either way, you can use PluralEyes to make a multiclip from the sequence afterward. This works in the latest version of PluralEyes but perhaps didn’t if you tried it a long time ago.

The solution was very simple 🙂 And I’m really stupid 😀 When I had my multicam sequence synced well, I simply needed to export mov clip from begin to end for each synced camera (other tracks disabled). Of course when I exported those moves I checked out option “Make Movie Self-Contained”. In this way my export goes really fast and my movies was small (2,42 Gigs for about 90 min.). After that I imported those movies in project, and made multiclip from them using option “Synchronize by In Point”. That’s all. I simply forgot about movie export option “Make Movie Self-Contained”. 🙂

    Hello,

It’s very great to have so many cameras during a young singers constest !
I only turn with two cameras during and also it’s not easy to synchronise this two videos. but, yes, exporting this sequence in mov clip from begin to end for each synced camera and it’s good after !

    thank’s to your post

    Hay!!

May I ask a question on this matter?
i have captured a clip on my G5 with the camera where the material is shoot on, and then i copied it to a hard disk.
that hard disk i connected to my macbook, and openend the clip in the project.
then i did Stop-detect brakes. but to my surprise he made a break at every half second!for a clip only half an hour.
before i have never had any problem with detect stop-break.
    do you know what happened?

    thanks a lot,

    eva

Just to clarify, you unchecked “Make Movie Self Contained”?
Are you saying that there must NOT be a tick next to “Make Movie Self Contained”, correct?

    That is correct.

Yes. That’s correct. I UNCHECKED option “Make self contained movie” 🙂 That was long time ago. Now I try to build OB van for 8 cameras 🙂

I have read all the story, and don’t understand how your multiclip edit was so Hard. FCP handles it EASY as it possible just as:1-2-3. Even when the footage is synchronized in timeline – Razot tool, select all – make multiclip and BAM. Even if not created shortcuts – you can assign them to your desired function keys + 1(for track1) 2 for track 2 and so on. and then press play and work in linear mode. cut everything in realtime.
Another solution is yes – the best in sync. – Plural. but when making it in HD, 12cams, and 3hours concert… this is fu*** crazy.. you can go home to eat or cam take a cig to “smoke” 🙂 its hard if working with Canon non converted footage. but.. everything can be done.
