We are working with another FC editor. We are using FCP 6 and he’s at FCP 4.5. We capture DVCAM via firewire movie files with separate audio channels 1 and 2.

When opened in our version of FCP, we see and can edit two separate/distinct audio channels.

When he opens the same movie file, the audio is combined into one Mono channel….a single track.

Is there a project setting that automatically combines two separate audio channels into one mono channel?

Just hoping it’s a simple cure rather than some incompatibility issues. Thank you.

FCP 4.5 cannot handle clips captured with more than 2 channels of audio.
That capability was introduced in FCP 5.

For this to work, he needs to upgrade.

Quicktime limitation. The version of Quicktime he is probably using (QT 6) has a limit of TWO tracks of audio. QT 7 changed that, making FOUR tracks possible.

    That might be his issue.

After looking again, I see you have only two channels. (is it possible you had the capture set to capture 4 channels?)

Still, I think its due to the changes made in FCP 5 in the way the program handles audio. He should upgrade to at least FCP 5 (preferably 6, if his computer meets the minimum requirements)

I was just about to respond that we’re only capturing two channels of audio anyway when you corrected.

However, having him update QT may help these issues. And an update of FCP might as well. Something we were and he was, trying to avoid.

Again, though, is there any sequence setting that would “merge” two tracks of audio into one? It even occurs when he opens the file in the viewing window…..only one track of merged audio appears.

    thank you.

No. There is no setting that does this. This was a symptom reported by many when FCP 5 was first released…though it was always in the case of multichannel audio.

He needs to update to fix the problem. There is no workaround.

You might try only updating Quicktime, but they may result in other problems and not fix the problem.

The update program to 6 is very generous (you get the whole suite for a very reasonable price). Of course if his computer does not meet the requirements for FCP 6, then he will have to track down a copy of 5.x on Ebay or something.

I was just hoping it wasn’t operator error….his or mine….causing the problem. thanks.
