  • FCP & Motion : Multiple Round Tripping / Saving Many Versions

Posted by Tom Daigon on December 4, 2006 at 12:30 am

Im a recent convert from another platform, with a little confusion with some round tripping from FCP to Motion and back and forth (several times). I always like to save the progression of versions of things I edit, so I have it existing in various stages. I really liked the idea of embedding the motion project in FCP so updating was immediate (and access to raw elements like particles and stuff is intact), but it seemed to want to keep saving to the same file name and if I didnt things got scrwed up (missing media and such).
Since I want to preserve the progression of FCP files and Motion files, can anyone suggest a better approach? I searched my manuals for (embedded or round tripping) but found no info. The Total Training FCP Studio course I taking doesnt go into this kind of detail. If someone knows of any literature that would help clairify this stuff, lay it one me. I tried several organized methodical appraoches and ended up with a headache

Use Save As in Motion to keep all your versions.

Yes, “Save As” is appropriate for saving the updated Motion file.
To furthur clarify….I was referring the the process of embedding the Motion Project in the FCP timeline.
And the process of repeatedly accesing that embedded project to make revisions or enhancements. My confusion
was a result of trying this and loosing media in the process. I think part of my solution involves using “Open In Editor” every subsequent time I need to access Motion and making sure the updated Motion file (in the FCP list of sources) is the one in the timeline when I save the updated verion of the FCP file.
