So we’re in the painful transition from FCP to PPro and PC’s. We have a ton of archived projects for FCP.

The problem is, when we open up those folders on a PC we see a bunch of .mov’s and a bunch of “file” files. If I pop a .mov on the end of the filename for the file, I can get quicktime to open them.

In both cases QT reads the file as HDV at the proper size and framerate. It will either then freeze, show a white screen and playback audio, or show a blackscreen and playback audio.

I’m thinking that quicktime on a mac has a way of using HDV that qt on a pc doesn’t. Is there any hope for getting these files to play on a PC? I don’t want to keep the mac around if I don’t have to.

    Hmmm…

I’ve not tried QT wrapped HDV files on a PC myself. PPro CS3 will read QT DV media, but it seems to me that I had gotten information somewhere about the HDV wrapper in QT (or maybe more pertinently, in FCP) was somehow a Mac proprietary situation.

Unfortunately, as in the case of DVC ProHD codecs on the Mac, Apple has used exclusivity to protect its turf in particular workflows. Shrewd business decision for them…sort of a pain in the neck for us.
