  • FCP – Mastering HDV project

Posted by Oliver Parker on January 10, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I have a completed 90min project, shot on a sony V1 which was captured and edited using the Sony HDV 1080i50 firewire codec in FCP. I am now trying to master on to a sony HDV deck but am not able use the ‘edit to tape’ function that i use with all DVCAM projects. I get an error message “Capture preset is set to HDV. Edit to tape is unsupported with this configuration” I have tried all the various different codecs available in FCP.

The print to tape option works but i have no control over time code and after 70mins the footage starts skipping!

Is there any way round this?

    Thanks,

    Oliver Parker

The HDV format only allows for print to tape, you cannot edit to tape. Therefore you cannot have control over time code.

You say you project is 90 min. What tapes are you using I personally have never seen HDV tapes that are longer then 60 min or so.

Thanks. The tapes are the large format tapes that only fit in the deck. They take 124mins of HDV footage and 60mins Of DVCAM.

I was wondering if the reason for breaks in time code and skipping of A/V has to do with the speed of the system i’m using because i’m not using a MacPro. Having said that i am using a top spec macbook Pro with 3GB of RAM and FCS 2 so i can’t imagine that it would be that!

when the project was finished i exported the sequence as a quicktime using current settings. then re-imported to a new project to master, as this method has aways helped with dropped frames when mastering in DVCAM. It also saves about 6 hours of the ‘conform HDV footage’ when starting the print to video. would this have an effect?

    again, thank for your help!

I don’t think so I was actually going to sagest trying exactly what you have done. Try trashing the FCP preffs and then creating another brand new project.

However I have never tried to lay an HDV project that long back to tape, so lI cant say it length is an issue or not.

Whenever i need to control the timecode on print to video I manually set it on the deck (plus 3 seconds for preroll). We have a Sony HDV/MiniDV/DVCAM deck and under the menu settings there’s a section called TC/UB settings which allows you to preset your timecode which you can get frame accurate TC outputs on your tape.

We use this method a fair amount for creating Offline tapes for clients when we shoot film or HD and they want to edit at home or cross convert to BetaSP or digiBeta.

    Hope this helped!

    thanks for you help.

managed to sort the problem out if anyone else has a similar problem…went back to the original project and sequence that the fine cut was done on instead of using the exported quicktime. I used the print to video and endured the 6 hour wait for the ‘conform HDV’. transfered perfectly!

Do you have any special process you use to accomplish this?
When I go to TC/UB Set in the Menu, I only see; HDV/DV in TC, TC Format, TC Reset.
I don’t seem to have any way of changing the TC itself?
