I have one student that logs in to log and capture and FCP wants to separate the audio and video. They are the only one that when looking at the log and capture window and capture settings that free space shows different values of space remaining for audio and video. All other students show a combined value for audio and video. When she captures, it the only file she finds is one for audio. I have tried to delete her FCP plist file with no positive results. Also, when she goes to change scratch disks, she is the only student that the audio capture check box is not ganged to the video capture check box. Anyone have any ideas?

When capturing seperate Audio and Video files, you need to very carefully track the location of each file in the scratch disk locations. If you want them to land in the same directory, you need to expressly set it. It is quite possible to put the audio on a completely different hard drive than the video.

That the box is unchecked is totally consistent with the intent.

What the student wants and what FCP wants are two different things.

Assuming she is working with DV footage, FCP really really really wants the audio and video to remain together as one file. It works best that way with DV25 footage.

The option to separate it is available and really only appropriate for higher quality captures.

Why it’s happening is tough to say, but she shouldn’t be capturing that way anyhow. Tell her to capture it the way FCP wants, not the way she wants, and her issue should alleviate itself.

Go to the Systems Settings pulldown menu. Under the “scratch disks” tab is a checkbox for capturing audio and video as separate files. Make sure this box is not checked. I’m not certain, but I believe this setting may be tied to each persons user preference information, so each time this particular user logs onto the machine and opens up FCP, that box will become checked and the separate files will result. Uncheck it, quit FCP and the next time the user logs in, all should be OK.
