  • FCP & Kona LHe recommendations?

Posted by Dan Skinner on November 30, 2007 at 5:31 pm

I am getting ready to purchase a new FCP system and I need a capture card. I am leaning towards Kona LHe. I currently use a Blackmagic Extreme and have had no problems.

I shoot SD but sometimes do HD. I always have to downconvert because we are facility that shows everything we make in SD 16 x9. We are hoping to move to HD in the future.

    Does any have an opinon?

    thanks
    dan

The Kona LHe, or the Decklink Extreme HD and Multibidge Pro will all off HD to SD downconvert. So you have lots of choices.

[dan skinner] “I am leaning towards Kona LHe. I currently use a Blackmagic Extreme and have had no problems.”

I made the move from BM Extreme to Kona LH and I quickly became a devote of AJA. I had been skeptic of the many raves I was hearing, and I also wondered if their higher prices were really worth it, but I gotta say, I really do prefer AJA’s attitude, service and their gear.

You’re hoping to move to HD?
Some day in the very near future, someone is going to ask you to shoot & deliver in HD. The time to prepare yourself is before they ask.

In many ways, HD has become cheap. Hard drives are bigger and cheaper than ever before. HD monitors start under $1k. 1/3 inch cameras for under $10K give decent picture, and there will soon be 1/2 inch cameras below $10k.

In my mind the only reason not to upgrade to HD now is because you haven’t spec’d & priced it out yet. And that’s no excuse.

Arnie- The facility I work in is a church. We are SD and everything we make is for in house broadcast. Moving an entire live production facility and Edit facility to HD cost $$$. We know that we will move to HD just not sure when. hence the wording of “hope to move to HD.”

Thanks for the recomendations on a capture card.

Thanks David. Everyone has said AJA’s service is better.

I didn’t know that before, sorry if i was a bit short with you. But as you pointed out, it’s on the block for the future. You don’t need to do everything all at once, but as each system or subsytem gets replaced, it might make sense to ugrade that specific system. Just try to keep your options open.
