  • FCP keeps shutting down during export

Posted by Andy Morin on April 4, 2010 at 6:49 am

I keep trying to export into Quicktime conversion and it goes to about 20% completion with about an hour left to write the video and then unexpectantly shuts down. I’m working with a projects timeline that is about 8min 30sec. Its with footage from an ex1r and its an easy setup, export to high quality and an h.264 codec.
    My laptops specs are :
    2.6GHz intel core 2 duo
    4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I’ve cut projects this length before, but never with the EX1R. I’ve got every other program closed, Any clue why it keeps shutting down?

First export a self contained QT with Export Quicktime movie and then use that file in Compressor to create your other files.

I was having a similar issue when sending to compressor. I used FCS Remover and reinstalled compressor and it’s been fine since. Have you tried to delete FCS and reinstall?

Make sure your timeline is completely rendered. Place a check on all your render options.

The timeline is completely rendered. The only thing is a light blue color that wont render. Anywho i’ve thought a lot about this and it’s so hard to go down a list troubleshooting b/c it will often take 30min to write and then shutdown. So here’s a few things ive thought of:

    1. I had to clear room to bring in all the footage from XDCAM transfer. I may have tried to delete some rendered files to make room. EX. Sequence 1-FIN-000000033. So i may have rearranged some things. But it doesn’t make that much sense bc all the clips are still visible and functioning.

    2. Potentially Not having the right sync between Sequence settings and export settings. Mine right now are
    Compressor: H.264
    Quality: High
    1920×1080
    Aspect Ratio:HDTV 1080i (16:9)

    Export:
    Setting:AppleProRes 422(HQ) 1920X1080 30p 48KHZ
    Checked options:
    Recompress all frames
    Make self-contained movie

I did what Don advised with exporting the quicktime movie instead of conversion and it successfully finished, but for some reason there are maybe 1 or 2 skewed frames in the movie that resemble what too much snow on a satellite would look like to the picture. Just for one frame and then corrects itself. So I did that on a few different export settings and it for maybe one it gave me the Disc space error. Just now I hooked up my external and exported the video only, with the AppleProRes 422(HQ) 1920X1080 30p 48KHZ.
The picture is good, now I’m just trying to cut the audio out of the original sequence and laying it together with a finished video. Seems like a lot of trouble. I’ve done maybe minute long videos so far with the XDCAM footage and it was fine. Could it be my system can’t handle the file size.
Again, I now have 11gb of free space, 4gb ram and a 2.4ghz intel Core 2 duo

I just got a message just a little more that 50%through saying Error:File is too big.
I’ve got the originally exported Quicktime movie over the original audio. The Original audio is 3 Mp4 tracks that I imported from the itunes. The video is without audio is about 2gb.
